Communication 222 is an introduction to gathering and presenting information for publication. The focus is on news writing, summary leads, organization of facts, article structure, and basic reporting skills.

This course prepares you to gather and make sense of information from diverse sources, write compelling news stories, and learn about the field of journalism. By the end of the term you will be able to report and write a basic news story that could be published in print or online with little or no revision. The course also gives those working with the media (such as public relations practitioners) a better understanding of news practices, values and requirements. Over the semester, we will discuss what constitutes news (and why), how news is gathered, and how to report and write various types of news stories. Frequent writing exercises (at home and in class) will allow you to practice and perfect these skills.
